Photocopier

A photocopier is a machine that makes a duplicate of original document or image onto the paper within a quick time and at less cost. A photocopier is formally known as a XEROX machine or copy machine.

Invention:

Chester Carlson invented the photocopier in 1938. The main function of a photocopier is cloning the master print. But Carlson called this process Electrophotography. After 10 years in 1948 Electrophotography was renamed xerography. The first photocopy print was released by the company XEROX in 1949.

Functionality:

The modern photocopiers are ultimately different from legacy machines with huge changes like print on two sides of the page (duplex printing), staple documents, create booklets, and send scans and faxes, all at the touch of a button.

The main functionality behind the photocopier is “opposites sides attract”. Toner is a kind of charcoal powder that is used to print text and images on paper. The powder is negatively charged and the paper is positive so they attract each other.

How does it work?

  • The drum is positively charged by using static electricity. It is the brain of the photocopier.
  • A laser green light passed along with the glass that means the instance of master copy was stored onto the drum.
  • Subsequently, when the light passed the white area of the image became negative and the black area of the image became positive.
  • The toner which is negatively charged attracts the positive area means text area or black area on the drum.
  • The toner melts on the paper by printing the letters using heat and pressure rollers.
  • Finally, the identical copy of the original document comes outside of the machine.
